It’s been scientifically proven that you don’t need to work 16 or 18 hours a day to be more effective. In fact, the exact opposite has been proven. It’s important to take breaks just as it’s important to reward yourself. Going on vacation is good for productivity and the economy.

As Americans, we already have the fewest vacations day than any other country, but why have we been taking less and less vacation? According to Psychology Today:

  • This year alone, 55% of American did not take their vacation days
  • For the 45% who did take their vacations, 41% are checking into their work while away.
  • 85% of U.S. executives are cancelling their vacations in order to work

The secret to being productive is not working too hard.

What types of vacations and activities will boost your productivity?

Resorts and cruises are some of the more common types of vacations to take with your family, they are fairly easy to obtain and manage, and they provide plenty of activities.

For instance, The New York Post wrote about the world’s most extravagant beach, Comparing two resorts, the Beach Enclave North Shore’s private villas with the more traditional resort-style of the Shore Club. Both feature very rich and vibrant environment ideal for unplugging and relieving stress while hosting a multitude of amenities and activities.

Beach Enclave North Shore Amenities

Fully staffed so you won’t have to make your bed — or even a latte. The on-property concierge fields requests from in-home spa services to yoga instruction, and it’s a short walk to the fitness center and yoga decks. Beach amenities include loungers, umbrellas, towels and water, plus paddle-boards, kayaks and snorkel gear. The island is home to the third-largest barrier reef system in the world; Big Blue leads weekly snorkeling outings on the villas’ beach as well as excursions farther afield for diving and fishing. – The New York Post

The Shore Club Amenities

Three pools are better than one: A peaceful, infinity-edge adults-only retreat and a curved family pool face the beach, while a large pool with small waterfalls and plenty of cushy loungers is the property’s centerpiece. The 800-plus feet of sand is peppered with deck chairs and umbrellas, but never feels crowded. Breezy Long Bay is a favorite of kite surfers, but they never impede the mellow swimming in the shallow clear waters of the Caribbean. Equipment for water sports, from stand-up paddle-boards to kayaks to a Hobie Cat boat, is readily available. – The New York Post

The “ART” of Vacationing

The U.S. Travel Association conducted a study, which despite having direct benefits to increases in productivity, taking vacations could significantly boost the US economy.

They found that if workers used all of their available time off, the economy would benefit from more than $160 million in business sales and $21 million in tax revenues. Taking your days off would support 1.2 million jobs in industries ranging from retail, manufacturing, and to transportation. If employees would take just one additional day of earned leave each year, the result would mean $73 billion in output for the U.S. economy and positive impacts for both employees and businesses.

5 ways taking a vacation can increase your productivity

  1. Vacations relax you
  2. Taking a break makes you more productive
  3. A change of pace boost creativity
  4. Nature helps you focus
  5. Going on vacations change your perspective

Be a more productive trader

As Americans, we are known for leaving our vacation days on the table. We are the only advanced economy in the world that doesn’t guarantee our workers get paid vacation, yet we are not the most productive workers in the world.

Data from the OECD shows that working more hours means less productivity. The most productive countries are Germany and France—each of which has mandated more than 30 days of vacation.” – Forbes, Take a Vacation to Boost Your Productivity.

The Harvard Business Review found that worker in other countries have a stronger desire to get a lot done as well as a tendency to move faster.
